Services

  • Early Intervention services are recommended based on a comprehensive evaluation that considers the unique profile of each child. Below is a list and brief description of services that may be recommended:

    • Itinerant Specialized Instruction

Itinerant services provide supports and services for children who are in need of specially designed instruction in their typical Early Childhood Educational environments (ECE). Providers travel to learning centers or schedule sessions by appointment, in order to help children and their support systems throughout their development during the preschool years. This includes consultation with and recommendations for ECE staff, enabling children to be educated with their typically-developing peers.

    • Early Childhood Special Education Classroom (ECSE)

Sessions in a classroom setting outside of a child's typical educational environment may be recommended depending on his or her unique needs. ECSE classrooms embed communication and behavioral support within their programming. The CLIU #21 Early Intervention evaluation team and your child's IEP team will work together with you to determine appropriate programming.

    • Speech and Language Support

Speech & Language Support may be recommended for children experiencing difficulty with sound production, using and understanding language, and/or who require a communication method other than verbal speech (communication boards, device, sign language). Speech and language support can occur itinerantly or in the classroom.

    • Hearing Support

Itinerant hearing support services may be recommended to children with an identified hearing loss that significantly affects their development. These services are delivered in the student's typical Early Childhood Educational environment (ECE). Providers travel to learning centers or schedule sessions by appointment, in order to help children and their support systems throughout their development during the preschool years. This includes consultation with and recommendations for ECE staff.

    • Early Childhood Deaf and Hard of Hearing Classroom (DHoH)

Sessions in a classroom setting outside of a child's typical educational environment may be recommended depending on his or her unique needs. The CLIU #21 Early Intervention DHoH classrooms is based on a total communication (TC) philosophy. TC incorporates all means of communication: listening, lipreading, speech, formal sign, natural gestures, fingerspelling, and body language. Children in TC programs typically wear hearing aids or cochlear implants, and the goal is to optimize language development in whatever way is most effective for the individual child. As a result, implementation with one child may look quite different than implementation with another child.

    • Vision Support (BVI)

Vision support may be recommended for children with a diagnosed visual impairment that significantly affects their development.

    • Orientation and Mobility (O&M)

O&M support may be recommended for children with a severe visual impairment and who need assistance learning to navigate within their educational environment.

    • Physical Therapy (PT)

Physical Therapy support, with a prescription, may be recommended for children who are unable to access their classroom environment due to motor impairments.

    • Occupational Therapy (OT)

Occupational Therapy support may be recommended for children who have difficulty with balance, coordination, body awareness, and sensory input.

    • Specialized Instruction - Behavior Management, Consultation, and Monitoring

Support may be recommended for children having severe problems following directions, accepting limits, socializing with peers and participating in regular nursery, daycare, early intervention, and/or in the home setting.

    • Family Support

The EI staff provides support that is individual to each family’s needs. This may include referral to other community agencies, information on specific areas of interest, family engagement activities, and coordination of their children’s educational program.

    • Parent Trainings & Professional Development

Periodic workshops are scheduled on topics of interest for parents, ECE providers, and educators. This provides a network of current information and a time for sharing ideas and concerns with others.

    • Public Awareness

CLIU #21 contacts physicians, school districts, nursery schools, and daycares on an ongoing basis to explain Early Intervention services. EI staff participate in the Local Interagency Coordinating Councils (LICC), State Interagency Coordinating Councils, and other community groups.
