Guest Teacher Program Overview - Career
The Guest Teacher Program is a service the CLIU offers to the community and our local school districts. Individuals who have obtained a bachelor's degree from an accredited college may apply to participate in the program. The program's purpose is to provide quality substitute training to individuals with limited or no teaching experience. The program is conducted once a year in order to provide participating Districts with trained substitute teachers for each school year. Each Guest Teacher exits the program with the basic understanding to be a substitute teacher on a day-to-day basis and an emergency permit issued by the PA department of Education which makes the Guest
Teacher eligible to substitute teach in any participating District. The opportunities are rewarding and gratifying.
The Basics of Applying to the Program
The program is advertised in local newspapers. Interested applicants begin the process by completing an employment application. An applicant may download an application packet clicking here.
Completed applications are returned to the Human Resources Department in accordance with deadlines and requirements of the program. The timeline for the current program is:
2008-2009 Timeline of Events
September 12, 2008: Deadline to return completed application
September 23, 24, and 25, 2008: Interviews
September 30, 2008 and October 1, 2008: Training
October 16, 2008: Deadline for final documentation
October 29, 2008: Meet and Greet Session
Individuals who return completed application packets as specified by the application letter will have their materials reviewed and if selected, contacted to schedule an interview. The applicant must be available during the designated dates and times for the interviews.
Interviews are conducted by the participating Districts' Administrators. The interview is designed to give the applicant a better understanding of the program and to provide insight to the types of situations one may encounter as a substitute teacher. The interviewee receives written notice informing him/her as to whether or not he/she has been accepted into the program.
The Basics of Participating in the Program
If accepted, the Guest Teacher Trainee must attend two days of training. The training is the most integral part of the program. Throughout the two days of training the Guest Teacher Trainees learn of the different aspects of education. Speakers for the training program include superintendents, principals, school nurses, educational consultants, special education professionals and Veteran Guest Teachers who share their personal experiences of the program. At the end of day two, Guest Teachers are asked to complete additional paperwork as required by state and federal law, prior to attending a Meet and Greet session.
The Meet and Greet session concludes the program. On the Meet and Greet Day, the Guest Teachers meet with participating District Representatives. This is the opportunity for Guest Teachers to meet the District in which they are interested in substituting and learning of the District's requirement for employment.
Costs of Participating in the Program
The costs associated with the Guest Teacher program for the applicant are; a Guest Teacher participation fee of $25, a $10 fee for child abuse clearance, a $10 fee for the criminal history clearance, and $40 fee for the FBI clearance. The criminal clearance can also be obtained online at http://epatch.state.pa.us . Information regarding the FBI clearance can be found at http://www.pa.cogentid.com
Official transcripts are required, fees for obtaining these documents are dictated by the college or university that the applicant attended. If an individual was not educated in the United States, then an evaluation of transcripts is necessary, costs associated with the evaluation are determined
by the company the applicant chooses to do the evaluation. Information on the various companies offering an evaluation process as well as the requirements for foreign educated applicants can be found on the PA department of Education website www.pde.state.pa.us
The Guest Teacher is required to have a physical; costs associated with that doctor visit are the responsibility of the Guest Teacher.
Annual Renewal of the Substitute Teaching Emergency Permit
The emergency permit which is issued to each Guest Teacher after completion of the program is only valid for the school year in which it is issued. If a Guest Teacher is interested in continuing to substitute teach in the following year after the initial issuance of the emergency permit or any year there after, the Guest Teacher must annually complete an application for an emergency permit. The Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit provides all Guest Teachers the materials to renew their emergency permit. If a Guest Teacher does not renew their permit, he/she cannot work as a substitute teacher and cannot be issued a future permit under the Guest Teacher program in the future.
